The ruling deities of Ashwini are the Ashvin twins, born when the Sun god Surya and his wife Sanjna met in the form of horses. They are the physicians of the gods. The best-known story has them restoring youth to the aged sage Chyavana — and in return, the sage won them the right to share Soma, the nectar of immortality once reserved for the gods.
Ashwini spans 0° to 13°20′ of the zodiac, the head of Aries. As the first of the 27 birth stars, it is read as the star of beginnings. Its symbol is a horse’s head — the one that breaks away before anyone else.
