Surya is the Sun god who crosses the sky in a golden chariot drawn by seven horses, driven by Aruna, god of dawn. His wife Sanjna, unable to bear his heat, is said to have left her shadow Chhaya in her place — which is why Yama, god of death, and Shani (Saturn) both appear as Surya’s children.
In Vedic astrology the Sun governs the soul, the father, authority, and honor. As the only body that shines by its own light, it is read as the planet of the center.
